In the fall of 2007, Northern Essex President David Hartleb signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment [1] with a pledge to move the college toward eventual total climate neutrality.
The long-term goal is to move the college toward climate neutrality over the coming years. There are eight possible areas upon which the college may focus in the coming years:
- Reduction of energy use
- Pollution reduction
- Reduction of garbage through recycling
- Reduction of automobile travel by students, faculty and staff
- Alternative energy use
- Natural landscaping
- Infusion of sustainability into the colleges’ curriculum
- Environmentally friendly procurement practices
