In the fall of 2007, Northern Essex President David Hartleb signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment with a pledge to move the college toward eventual total climate neutrality.

The long-term goal is to move the college toward climate neutrality over the coming years. There are eight possible areas upon which the college may focus in the coming years:

  • Reduction of energy use
  • Pollution reduction
  • Reduction of garbage through recycling
  • Reduction of automobile travel by students, faculty and staff
  • Alternative energy use
  • Natural landscaping
  • Infusion of sustainability into the colleges’ curriculum
  • Environmentally friendly procurement practices
