Achieving the Dream (AtD) addresses a national imperative: to increase success for the growing number of students for whom community colleges are the point of entry into higher education. The initiative is particularly focused on improving success rates including degree and certificate attainment and transfer to four-year colleges.

Data-driven decision-making is key to attaining the AtD project goals. Achieving the Dream colleges will use data on student outcomes to diagnose areas that need improvement, generate the institutional will for change, and assess the impact of the changes on students.

All participating colleges are required to provide certain data for each cohort and each semester for six years. Currently, required data include items that are mainly available from existing administrative records including transcripts.

Specifically, colleges will examine how many and which students achieve the following:

  • Successfully complete developmental courses;
  • Enroll in and successfully complete gatekeeper courses, such as English 101 and Math 101;
  • Complete the credit hours they enroll in;
  • Re-enroll from one semester to the next; and
  • Earn certificates and degrees.
